South Hinksey village lies in the floodplain to the south-west of Oxford city. About 15 houses flooded in 2000, 2003 and 2007.

All the measures carried out since 2007 on Hinksey Stream and Hinksey Drain, downstream of the village, will benefit the village by getting water away rather than allowing it to accumulate.

Several householders have installed flood resistance and resilience measures.

The local farmer, Nick Frearson, keeps the important field ditch that runs near the village open, most recently clearing it in 2010. Important because it now leads directly to the large new Environment Agency flood culverts near Redbridge.

The Vale of White Horse District Council has installed new culverts under a causeway across a field next to the village. This will keep flood water moving rather than pooling in this field and allow it to escape sooner after a flood. Thank you to District Engineer Peter Dela.
