Following severe flooding in Oxford in 2000, 2003 and 2007 local people felt that not enough was being done to reduce the risks of it happening again. As a result the Oxford Flood Alliance (OFA) was formed on 29 November 2007 in (appropriately) The Waterman's Arms on Osney Island, Oxford. From the start our aim has been to campaign to reduce the risk of flooding in Oxford and the nearby communities in the Oxford floodplain.
We work to press the case for flood risk reduction with the authorities, proposing specific ways in which this can be achieved. We are concerned that action is taken in the short to medium term and that undue reliance is not placed on the Oxford Flood Risk Management Strategy, which, while welcome, may take years to happen, if it ever does. To see why we're so concerned go to the flood risk calcuator.
We are also interested in promoting flood resilience.
This website tells you more about the background and what we are doing to try to improve things.

Oxford in the great Thames flood of March 1947. The flooding lasted 10 days and affected over 3500 properties in Oxford and its immediate area. If it were to happen now the Environment Agency predict that figure would be over 5600.
